Thanks to the research done by Nathaniel's descendant Lynn Hayes we learn, in a nutshell, most (but not all) of what is known about him. (Lynn's premiere work - "The Ancestors of Rowley Alonzo Sprout.")

Nathaniel married Naomi Rowley on 9 Jan 1785.

In 1787 he and his wife were recorded as being members of the Baptist church in North Granville, Washington, NY. In 1789 they were in Shawangunk, Ulster, NY (for the birth of daughter Phebe Hendricks Eastman). In 1790 the family was residing in Westfield (now Fort Ann), Washington, NY. In 1800 they are living in Paris Township, Oneida, NY. In 1805 they were residents of Attica, NY.

From "Early Recollections of Attica, Genesee County [now Wyoming] NY," by James Sibley Tolles, April 1874: "Early this year (1805) Doctor Nathaniel Eastman came into town, located on the farm recently owned by George Miller, and commenced practice as a physician. He was the first M.D. south of Batavia. At the same time his nephew, Doc. Hezekiah Eastman, located on the farm recently owned by Mr. Lyman Brainard, building a double house twenty rods south of the cheese factory. They were long known as the old Doctor and the young Doctor. The old Doctor's son, [Nathaniel - who would move on to Medina, Seville County OH] a student, also came with them. Benjamin Potter, Doctor Milton E. Potter's father, was also a student of the Eastman's, married the young doctor's sister and soon after commenced practice at Sheldon Center. These were the only physicians on this part of the purchase for ten years or more."

In 1810 their residence was Sheldon, Genesee, NY.

The year 1820 finds them in Jennings County, IN.

In an undated document written with the permission of Harold Eastman we learn, "According to the story handed down through the generations we learn that the Eastman family came to Madison IN on a flat boat, landed, and brought their goods up the hill on a sled pulling it on to their destination. Dr. Eastman had heard of the rich bottom lands and country around Vincennes and was headed for there, but his wife became tired and due to wifely persuasion, gave up and settled on Six Mile."

The children:

Salina Eastman, born November 07, 1785 in New York; died January 10, 1788 in New York.

Debora Eastman, born July 21, 1787 in New York; married Luther Stanhope April 1805, born June 23, 1786 in Bolton, Worcester County, Massachusetts; died August 14, 1833 in Attica, Wyoming County, New York. The date of Debora's death is unknown, but it seems she died between 1812 (birth of Lucrates) and 1818 (when Lucrates moved to Indiana with his Eastman grandparents).

When Luther Sr. died he named Orilla Toms, Luther Stanhope Jr., and Lucrates Stanhope as the children of his first wife. I am very sure that Debora was also the mother of Salome Stanhope, b.c. 1806, who married Hosea Sprout in 1825 and had died by 1830 (per census).

Phebe Hendricks Eastman (my 3x Great Grandmother), born July 05, 1789 in Shawangunk, Ulster County, New York; died September 24, 1845 in Geneva Township, Jennings County, Indiana; married Nathaniel Sprout III May 29, 1806 in Attica, Wyoming County, New York.

Dr. Nathaniel Eastman, born June 17, 1792 in Fort Ann, Washington County, New York; died August 15, 1861 in Seville, Medina County, Ohio; married Emily Burnham November 17, 1816; born February 24, 1800 in Middletown, Windsor County, Vermont; died April 02, 1891 in Seville, Medina County, Ohio.

Sarah Naomi (Sally) Eastman, born May 30, 1795 in New York; died Bet. 1870 - 1880 in Six Mile, Spencer Township, Jennings County, Indiana; married (2) Daniel Tyler Bef. 1828 in New York; born Abt. 1797 in New York; died Bet. 1870 - 1880 in Six Mile, Spencer Township, Jennings County, Indiana.

Sally had first married her cousin Matthew Eastman and they had two sons together; we think one of the sons died young. Orran Andrew Eastman was raised by his father in Attica NY, but joined his mother and her second family in IN shortly before he died there on 30 Sep 1845 as a young son, husband, and father. Orran is buried in Sixmile Cemetery, Jennings, IN.

Solomon Rowley Eastman, born July 07, 1796; died November 04, 1881 in Spencer Township, Jennings County, Indiana; married Nancy Mariah French March 01, 1818 in New York; born September 18, 1801 in New York; died November 06, 1878 in Spencer Township, Jennings County, Indiana. Nancy and Rowley had two known children, Maria Louisa and Horace.

Eliza Emily Eastman, born November 10, 1798 in New York; married Daniel Newton December 26, 1819 in Jennings County, Indiana. I was able to track Eliza and Daniel and found that she died late in 1835 or early 1836 in an unknown location, either in IN, OH, IL, and even possibly WI where Daniel Newton remarried in 1836. Eliza and Daniel had two known surviving daughters, Hannah and Mary. A son was under five in 1830, but did not appear in the 1840 census.

Mary Anna Eastman, born September 18, 1805 in Sangerfield, Oneida County, New York; died February 08, 1847 in Jennings County, Indiana; married Horace Nathan French November 04, 1821 in Jackson, Ripley County, Indiana; born July 06, 1798 in Burlington Flats, Otsego County, New York.
