Cpl. Wendell Russell Jackson served during World War II as a member of the 200th Coast Artillery Corps, U.S. Army. He died February 4, 1943, as a prisoner of war in Mukden POW Camp (Hoten POW Camp), in Mukden, Manchuria (Northeast China).

Cpl. Jackson was survived by his mother, Mrs. Hazel Mercer Walker; his grandmother, Mrs. Mae Duryee Powell; and his aunt, Mrs. Pearl Mercer Strohm.

Memorial services for Corp. Wendell R. Jackson, twenty-nine-year-old Detroit soldier who died in a Japanese prison camp at Mukden, Manchukuo, recently will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the United Brethren Church at Stoepel and Keeler. The Rev. J. F. Hatton will officiate. His mother, Mrs. Hazel Walker, of 8288 De Soto, received word of his death from the Army June 29.

Corp. Jackson, who was born in Detroit June 12, 1914[sic], attended Central High School and was inducted into the Army March 19, 1941. After training in Texas he was assigned to a coast artillery unit and sent to the Philippine Islands in September, 1941. He was stationed at Fort Stotsenburg when the [...] attacked.

Corp. Jackson later fought on Bataan and Corregidor and was taken prisoner when Corregidor fell in April, 1942. His mother knew nothing of his whereabouts until Jan. 2, 1943, 10 months after his capture.

He was the nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Strohm and the grandson of Mrs. Mae Powell, all of Detroit.
