Barbara Ann was the daughter of John Henry Messmore and Rachel VanPool, who had come to Pennsylvania from Rowan County, North Carolina. She had a younger sister, Mary, who married Jacob Rinehart and is buried in the Woodbury Cemetery in Morrow County, Ohio.

She married George Burkepile around 1810, and they had 9 children. See her husband's profile for details.

Following the death of her husband, she probably went to live with one of her children in the Mannsville area of Perry County, Pennsylvania. She was one of the charter members of the Mannsville Lutheran Church, in 1856, and was a faithful member of that church until her death. She was brought back and laid to rest next to her husband in the Ludolphs cemetery.
