William Barry, a son of John Barry (1717-1751) and the former Miss Catherine Porter (1714-1787); was born of Scotch-Irish Presbyterian ancestors from County Donegal, Ireland.

In 1781, William married Miss Jane Hanna, daughter of Capt. James and Jean [née Black] Hanna; with whom he had the following known children:
