Civil War Veteran. Son of John N. and Nellie nee Freeman Caldwell. Came to Oshkosh, Winnebago co. WI. in 1846. Received a common school education in Oshkosh. In 1863 enlisted Co. D 32nd WI. Vol. Inf., transfered to Co. D 16th WI. Moved to Eau Claire county in 1870 and purchased a farm in Otter Creek Valley. Married in 1861 Helen Harkness of Oshkosh WI. 8 children, Nellie who md. Rolle Sawyer, George, Archie, Anengo W., Grace the wife of Fred Bush in Black River Falls, Eva, Blanche who married J.Fletcher, and Royall. George F. Caldwell served 13 years as member of the Otter Creek town board, chairman 5 years. 1889 elected as a Republican from the 2nd district to the General Assembly of the state, served one term. Member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and G.A. R.
