Dr. Charles Danny Pruett

HURRICANE — Dr. Charles Danny Pruett, fondly known as ‘Doc' to his community and ‘Boo Boo' to his family, passed away this past Saturday, January 4, 2014, at Westwood Health Center after a long and fulfilling life. He was 90 years of age.

Dr. Pruett was born, July 31, 1923, in Bluefield, VA, to Shelia Davis and William Crockett Pruett. He was a graduate of Graham High School, Emory & Henry College, and Duke Medical School. His education was interrupted by World War II, when he served in the U.S. 7th Army's 70th Division as a mortar operator. He was later transferred to the 45th Division, which participated in the liberation of Dachau concentration camp in April 1945.

Upon returning from the War, Danny married his sweetheart Edna Allen Layne and, together, they worked hard to get him through medical school. Their first son, David, was born while Danny was still a medical student.

After completing medical school at Duke and a residency at the Medical College of Virginia, Danny and his family moved back to Bluefield, WV, where he spent the rest of his life growing his family and serving his community. Danny and Edna lived in the same house on Verdun Heights for almost 60 years. There they raised two additional children, William and Barbara, as Danny established his medical career by joining the old Bluefield Sanitarium partnership. After the Sanitarium closed, Doc practiced with J. Brookins Taylor and Charbrook Medico for many years. Following retirement, he continued to serve the Bluefield's in multiple community and medical aspects including past member of the WV Board of Licensed Practical Nurses and past trustee of College Avenue Baptist Church.

Doc Pruett was a proud G-Men. He was team medical doctor for the Graham football team for many years, often traveling alongside Coach Glynn Carlock, Sr., brother ‘Pig' Pruett, and a host of coaches and players.

Danny was preceded in death by both parents, his brother William C. ‘Bill' Pruett, and his wife of 65 years, Edna. Following Edna's death, Danny moved to Glenwood Park Retirement Village.
