Henry Colton Bliss was the son of Isaac and Helen Bliss of Stafford, Tolland Co., Conn. He married first, Mary Rodger, in Vermont in about 1857. The couple had the following children: Horace Colton Bliss Jr. (aka Harley), born in the States in 1858, Mary E., b.1864, Canada, Ellen, b,1867, Canada, and Janet (Jennie), b. 1870, Canada. Jennie was deaf and never married. Henry's wife died in Hamilton, Ontario. Bliss died in Hamilton, Ontario, 9 July 1908, at the age of 85.

On 24 May, 1882, Henry Colton Bliss, widower, married Sarah Duff,(1838-1912), daughter of Charles and Anne Lindley Duff of Papplewick, Nottinghamshire, England. Sarah immigrated to Canada with her eldest brother, Charles, in 1851. This was Sarah's first and only marriage. The couple had no children, but Bliss' daughter, Jennie lived with the family.

Bliss was a manufacturer of patent medicines.
