French Queen Consort. Born Maria Amelia Teresa di Borbone, Principessa di Borbone della Due Sicilie in Caserta, Italy, daughter of Ferdinand IV, King of Naples, and Marie Caroline Erzherzögin von Österreich. Driven from Naples in 1798, the Neapolitan royal family fled into exile. She met the exiled Louis-Philippe, Duke of Orleans, in Palermo. She married him in November 1809; the couple eventually produced ten children. The Duke and Duchess of Orleans returned to France in 1814 residing in the Palais Royal in Paris when Napoleon's Hundred Days drove them into back into exile. Marie Amélie and her children took refuge in England. The family was able to reestablish itself in Neuilly, France in 1817. In the July Revolution of 1830, Louis-Philippe was made lieutenant general of the realm and was chosen king of the French. Marie Amélie took her place as his consort reluctantly. In 1848 Louis-Philippe abdicated in favor of his grandson but his wishes were disregarded in the establishment of a republic. The family was again forced into exile, taking refuge in England once more. Marie Amélie died at age 83 in Claremont House, Esher, Surrey.
