Jack Leroy Elder, 83, of South Bend, IN passed away at 11:10 a.m. Sunday, January 5, 2014 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend. He was born on September 5, 1930 in Knox, IN to the late Vern and Beatrice (Rosebaum) Elder. On August 13, 1960 in South Bend, IN he was united in marriage to the former Mary Louise Nelson.
Mr. Elder is survived by his wife, Mary Louise Elder; sister, Betty (Fred) Stump of Osceola, IN; four nieces, Nina (Tim) Conrad of Glen Carbon, IL, Michele Raines of Washington, D.C., Jennifer Raines of Granger, IN and Meghan (Tom) Gibbey of Osceola, IN and nephew, Sean Stump of Osceola, IN.
Mr. Elder served his country honorably in the United States Air Force. He retired in 1989 after thirty years as an eighth grade teacher for the South Bend Community School Corporation. He was a member of the Presbyterian Players, the Michiana Photo Club and the American Legion. He was a member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, January 18, 2014 at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 225 Haney Avenue, South Bend, IN 46613. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. in the church. Private graveside services will be held at a later date.
