Helga Agneta Hoberman was born
May 4, 1911, on the family farm to Anna
Marie (Nielsen) and Peder Pedersen of
rural Newell. Later joining the family circle
were brothers Harry and Engvert
(Inky). She was baptized June 1, 1911.
She was confirmed at Nain Lutheran
Church March 25, 1925, by the Rev.
Hakon Jorgensen.
When Helga was eight years old her
father was killed in a hunting accident,
leaving her mother to raise three children.
Several years later her mother married
Chris Thomsen. He was a wonderful stepfather
throughout the years. She graduated
from Newell High School in 1929 and
spent one year at AJJB in Des Moines. In
1930 she moved to Sioux City and
worked at the Sioux City Gas and Electric
Company for four years.
On February 10,1934, Helga married
Ed Hoberman at Trinity Lutheran Church
in Sioux City. They had a son Richard and
a daughter Donna. Helga then became a
fanner's wife. They lived on the
Hoberman family farm, seven miles north
of Newell, where Richard now lives. Ed
and Helga moved into their new home in
Newell in 1963. Helga worked at the
Recorder's Office at the Buena Vista
County Courthouse for seven years. She
still belonged to a 500 couples card group
and enjoyed her two birthday club luncheons
that met regularly in Storm Lake.
Helga took part in church activities at
St. Peter Lutheran Church where she and
Ed attended since 1934.
