Entertainer. Born Lambros Worlou, to Greek immigrant parents in Alexandria, Egypt. In 1934 he traveled to Paris to study music and voice under Ninon Vallin, who provided classical training. He made his stage debut in 1937. He wa sthen booked at the Casino de Paris in 1938, and was an immediate success. He produced his first recordings at the time, but with the outbreak of the Second World War, he moved south to Toulouse. It was during this period that he took the stage name of Georges Guetary. His first role in operetta was in 1942. After the war, in 1950, he traveled to the US and appeared on Broadway in “Arms and the Girl,” for which he earned a Tony award for Best Foreign Performer. He progressed to feature films, and appeared in “An American in Paris” in 1951, the songs he performed,”Stairway to Paradise,” and the duet with Gene Kelly, “S'wonderful,” became a popular hits. Upon his return to France, he appeared in several more films including: “Le Cavalier noir” (1954), “Le Chemin du paradis” (1955), and “Une Nuit aux Baleares” (1956). A return to Broadway in 1958 had him starring in the less well received musical, ''Portofino.'' His recording and performing career continued in France, where he became an annual fixture on French television. Among his most popular songs were ''Bambino,'' ''Papa Aime Maman,'' "Dis papa," “Cet anneau d'or,” and ''La Samba Bresilienne.'' At age of 80, he gave a farewell concert at the Bobino music hall before retiring to Cannes.
