Daughter of James Washington Mayhew (WV) and Julia Ann Prickett (b. Fairmont WV)

In an article in the newspaper where she recorded her remembrances of early Carbondale, Hattie wrote, "I was named for my father's sister who married George Washington's cousin Henry Fairfax."

Many old records give place of birth of early Carbondale pioneers as "Virginia" but like the Mayhew family they were often from an area that is now West Virginia. Hattie's family came to Carbondale in 1860 from Fairmount West Virginia.
