PONCA, Neb. - Dr. Jon J. Putnam, 61, of Norfolk, Neb., formerly of Ponca, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.

Services were held Monday, Feb. 12, at First Presbyterian Church in Norfolk. The Rev. William Nottage-Tacey officiated. Masonic services were held by the Masonic Lodge 120 A.F. & A.M. of Wayne, Neb. Arrangements were under the direction of Home for Funerals in Norfolk.

Dr. Putnam was born June 7, 1939, in Ponca, the son of Darel "Curley" and Helen (Fields) Putnam. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Ponca High School. He received his bachelor of science degree from Wayne State College, in Wayne, Neb., his master's degree from Northeast Missouri State in Kirksville, Mo., and his PhD from Memphis State University in the field of special education.

He married in LuVerne, Iowa. He taught at Southern Arkansas University, Magnolia, Ark., and Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Neb. He had been a professor at Wayne State College in the Department of Education for 16 years.

He was active with Special Olympics for many years. At the International Special Olympics, he served as a field judge for the track and field events. He also headed the aquatic division of the Nebraska State Special Olympics.

He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Wayne Masonic Lodge 120 A.F. & A.M. He was a member of Abu Bekr Shrine Temple in Sioux City and First Presbyterian Church, where he served as superintendent of Sunday school. He worked with stained glass and restored and created many works for churches. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, golfing and camping. He was an instructor in the Hunter Safety Program.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and a daughter-in-law; a granddaughter; a brother and his wife; and two sisters and their husbands.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
