Obituary-James Alan Spurlin, 76, of Preachersville, survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Doris Anderson Spurlin, passed away Sunday, November 25, 2007, in his home.

Born in Madison County, he was the son of the late James R. and Nevelyn Alexander Spurlin. He was a member of the Drakes Creek Baptist Church where he was an active trustee and former church treasurer for many years. He was a member of the Lincoln County School Board for 11 years and was instrumental of the consoldation of the Lincoln County High School. He owned and operated Dix River Valley Farms. As a businessman, he was instrumental in the development of the West Wood Apartments and the Spurlin Funeral Homes. He served in the Korean War based on Okinawa, Japan.

In addition to his wife, surviving are: three sons, Jim Spurlin and his wife Libby of Lancaster, Dr. Mark Spurlin of Danville and Barry Spurlin of Preachersville. Also surviving are: seven grandchildren who were his life, Jessica, Kimberly, James David, Mark Alan, Ashley, Ethan and Haley Spurlin; and also a brother, George Spurlin.

Funeral services will be conducted at Drakes Creek Baptist Church in Preachersville at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 1, 2007, with the Reverends David Gambrell and Joe Cooper officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at Spurlin Funeral Home in Stanford, and from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday at Spurlin Funeral Home in Lancaster. Burial will be in the Lancaster Cemetery. Caswell-Saufley Post#18 will be providing military rites.

Active pallbearers will be: Mark Alan, James David and Ethan Spurlin, David Abee, James T. Rankin, Alan Bolhman, Harold Kurtz and Harvey Howard.

Honorary pallbearers will be: Marvin and Barbara Perkins, Drs. Robert and Martha Grise, Billy Jean Vanhook, Mike Kurtz, Rufus Walker West, Rosalea and Lisa Boone, Carolyn Rankin, Theo and Helen Nantz, B.C. and Louvenla Allen, Dr. Richard Nallinger, Dr. Brian Ellis, Dr. Anjum Bux, Dr. John Lacy, Dr. Greg Carlsen, Dr. Charles Campbell Georgia Colon, Delsie Brown, and the Drakes Creek Baptist Adult Sunday School Class.

Memorials referred to: Epharaim McDowell Cancer Foundation. Special recognition to the Epharaim McDowell Nurses, Housekeeping and Dietary Staff for the kind care Mr. Spurlin received.
