Mrs. Ruth BIRCH COMBS was born in Center Township, Greene County, Indiana, April 9, 1824, and her spirit left the body at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Vicey ULAND, 340 Jefferson Ave., Vincennes, Indiana, April 26, 1919; aged ninety-five years and seventeen days.
She was the daughter of John and Vicey BIRCH, who emigrated from Surry County, North Carolina to Indiana settling in Greene County. Thus she became a pioneer of our state. She lived within two and one-half miles of where she was born until two years ago when she went to Vincennes to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Vicey ULAND.
She was married to Aaron COMBS, April 11, 1844. Eleven children were born to them, five sons and six daughters, but only four survive her. They are Mrs. ULAND and Mrs. Eliza ANDERSON, Vincennes, Ind.; Aaron COMBS and Mrs. Alice HARDESTY, Center Township, Greene County, Ind. She had five brothers and five sisters, but just one sister, Mrs. Jane COMBS BREEDEN, of near Bloomfield, Indiana, is living. She is now eighty-five years old.
Mrs. COMBS’ husband died January 19, 1886. She had fifty-four grandchildren, thirty-five of whom are living; eighty-seven great-grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren. All her family, including those deceased and surviving, number one hundred and fifty-nine.
Mother COMBS was in every respect a remarkable woman. Her hospitality was proverbial. In no home was a welcome more cordially extended or appreciated than in hers. She was in her element when feeding the hungry, and especially the needy. Each year, April 9th, her birthday was a great day in her life. Her many relatives and friends gathered at her home on that day and enjoyed greatly the festal day in honor of her long and useful life.
All her children were with her when her earthly life closed. To her they were faithful and devoted. They lovingly ministered to her in her illness, as they ad the opportunity.
Being in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Vicey ULAND, during her nine-months’ illness, this daughter was most untiring and constant, as she lovingly and tenderly ministered to her. Let us hope that “beyond the sunset’s radiant glow” this faithful mother, sister and friend, rests from the labor of extraordinarily useful and unselfish life.
Last Saturday afternoon the funeral services here held at her daughter’s home, 340 Jefferson Ave., Vincennes, Ind., by Rev. L. C. HOWE. The final services were held at the home of Mother COMBS, and the remains were laid to rest in the Combs Cemetery. At Mother COMBS’ special request, Elder J. A.
