DIVITO, John J.,76, passed away Sunday, June 12, 2005 at his residence under the care of Hospice. He was born in Philadelphia, PA and moved to this area in 1955 from Hazelton, PA. He was general counsel for the diocese of St. Petersburg from its establishment in 1968. He had a private law practice for 42 years beginning in 1957. In 1987 he was ordained as the ancient order of the permanent diaconate. He served at St. Matthews and St. Patrick churches. In 2004 Mr. Divito was awarded the church's highest honor available to a lay person, the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice by Pope Paul II. He also received the Medal of St Jude for his service to the diocese. He was a member of the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle, the Holy Name Society. He was past grand knight and state deputy of the Knights of Columbus and past president of the Breakfast Optimist Club and the Pinellas County Trial Lawyers Association. He was also a member of the Knight of the Holy Sepulchre, a member of the Serra Club, active with Cursillo, a member of KAIROS prison Ministry Outreach and a member of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. He served in the US Army during the Korean War Conflict. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gloria, 4 sons, Joseph A., of Seminole, FL, Nicholas and Allyn C. both of St. Petersburg, FL, and Paul F. of Roswell, GA, a daughter, Helen S. Divito of St. Petersburg, a sister, Theresa Ciullo of Brigantine, NJ and a brother, Tito of Philadelphia, PA and 8 grandchildren. Mr. Divito was preceded in death by his son, J. Phillip Divito.
