"Harmon, John J, Corporal, resided in Cleveland County was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Surry County at age 22 April 26,1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia, August 10, 1863 when he was reported absent without leave. Rejoined the company prior to November 1, 1863, and present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865."
The 14th started out as the 4th Regiment N.C. Volunteers. It was also known as the Cleveland Blues. Other Harmons in the outfit were: Harman, David 2nd Lt.; Harmon, Augusta, Corporal; Harmon, John L. Private; Harmon, Preston, Private; Harmon, Reuben L, Corporal.
John Jake lived in Buffalo Creek and attended church at El Bethal and also Patterson Grove Church.
