He was the son of Colonel Morgan Lewis Brett and Zillah Quayle Brett.
On Saturday, September 25, 1937, he married Claire Benedict Hudson (1912-2007) at Trinity Episcopal Church in San Jose, California.
She was the daughter of Charles Bradford Hudson.
They were the parents of three children including Virginia Brett Smith (1942-2009).

After graduating from Palo Alto High School in 1926, he was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York and graduated in 1930. He served four years as an officer in the field artillery. He began his business career as a mechanical and production engineer with Oliver United Filters in Oakland. In 1937, he married his wife of Pacific Grove. They lived in Hillsborough for 49 years, where they raised their three children. In 1938, he joined the Coldwell, Cornwall and Banker Co. as a salesman in San Francisco. He was instrumental in the formation of the Industrial Property Division and became a Senior Vice President and Director with the company before his retirement in 1970. After his departure from Coldwell he formed Brett & Co., a San Francisco real estate investment company in which he was active until his move to the Monterey Peninsula in 1999. The company was involved in many major projects including the Symphony Towers project in downtown San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Office Park at 650 California Street.

He served on the University of California Board of Regents in the late 1960s and early 1970s where he led the fight to keep ROTC training on the UC campuses. He was a member of many professional, social and civic organizations including the San Francisco Real Estate Board, the Fort Point Army Museum Association, the Board of Governors of the Bay Area Council and President of the Mechanics' Institute of San Francisco from 1968 to 1969. He was a life member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and member of the Pacific Union Club, the Burlingame Country Club, the Bankers Club, the Engineers Club and the Menlo Country Club.

He died Saturday in Monterey after a short illness at the age of 94 years. Survivors included his wife; two daughters of Fairbanks, Alaska and Los Altos; a son of Pebble Beach; a brother of Oakland; two sisters of Montecito and Alhambra; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Memorial services were held in San Francisco and funeral services were at the West Point Military Academy.
