Ray was a US Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Hendersonville First United Methodist Church.

Retired from Archer Daniels Midland in 1992 after 40 years, the highlight of Ray's career was serving as the President of the National Cotton Council and representing the cotton industry in national events.

Living in Hendersonville, he was 86 years old when he died on January 3, 2014 at home.

Survivors included his wife, a married son, married daughter, five grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Hendersonville Memory Gardens.
