Funeral for John Robert Mahaffey, 14, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Cache School Auditorium with pastors Steve Mallow and Leonard Presley officiating.

Mr. Mahaffey died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, in Oklahoma City.

Interment will be in Cache Cemetery under direction of Whinery-Huddleston Funeral Service.

He was born March 6, 1999, in Lawton, to Don and Anne Hysong Mahaffey. John was living in the Cache-Indiahoma area and attended Cache Middle School, where he was an eighth-grader in Mrs. Baltierra's special education class. John was born with Down Syndrome, but his love for people and friendly nature far overcame any setbacks this condition might create. His outgoing personality prompted him to welcome everyone with his friendly smile and offer you his hand in greeting. John loved music especially blue grass and country music and often entertained his family or classmates with his "crazy legs" dance. He participated in the Special Olympics in the spring and was a member of the Hammer Heads Special Olympics swim team. John attended Immanual Baptist Church with his Granny Linda every Sunday, and without a doubt, is smiling and shaking hands with all the angels in heaven as we miss this innocent, happy little man.

Left to miss his smile and loving nature are his parents, Don and Anne Hysong Mahaffey, Cache; his Granny, Linda Hysong, Lawton; uncles: David Mahaffey, Buffalo; Will Mahaffey, Rogers, Ark.; and Tom Hysong and wife Lacretia, Chattanooga; aunts: Lena Gwinn and husband Dennis, Ralls, Texas, and Diana Blackwell, Beaumont; cousins: Brian Huddleston, Charlie Gwinn and Taylor Hysong; a special "Almost Aunt" Keri Brammer, Lawton; special friends, Andy and Marci Vanover, Lawton; and of course his school family, Mrs. Baltierra, Ms. Sylvia, Ms. Karen and classmates, Destiny, Skyla and Trent.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, retired Lt. Col. William and Carol Mahaffey and retired Sgt. 1st Class James D. Hysong.

Viewing will be from 2-5 p.m. today and from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made in John's memory to the Oklahoma Children's Hospital, 940 NE 13th Street, Ste 1B1306 Oklahoma City, OK 73104.
