DANBY - Donald F. Mellen, 57, of Danby, VT, went home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on Dec. 30, 2013.

He was born April 16, 1956, in Englewood, NJ, to the late Donald J. and Edna M. (Lange) Mellen. After Edna's premature death, the 5 boys were lovingly cared for by Don's father's second wife, Kathryn (Vollmer) Ritchie.

Don was a 1974 graduate of Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest, NJ, and then received a Bachelor of Science degree in Dairy Science from Delaware Valley College, Doylestown, PA, in 1978.

Don and Susan C. (Herhei) Mellen were married June 23, 1979, in Fredericksburg, PA.

They pursued their dream of owning a small family farm and settled in the mountains of Danby, VT. He so enjoyed raising quality livestock and over the years, they produced award-winning Brown Swiss cattle, dairy goats and most recently, his cherished herd of Suri llamas.

Don was hard working and dedicated to his career as an Animal Nutritionist, working for Agway Inc. for 25 years and then for Cargill Inc. for the past 10 years. He loved helping New England farm families and considered himself blessed to be able to work in a field that he was so passionate about.

Honest, kind and with a sense of humor, Don will be lovingly missed by his wife, Susan; his 4 brothers and their families, Steve Ritchie, Alan Ritchie, Dean Ritchie and Scott Mellen. Also Susan's parents, Stephen and Mary Herhei; sisters, Sonya Bohle and Barbara Roden, and brother, Buck Herhei and their families.

As Don basks in the loving Glory of Heaven, we will remember and honor his life with a Memorial Service in Spring 2014.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, contributions may be made in Don's memory to: The Brick Church, PO Box 75, North Clarendon, VT 05759.

Arrangements are under the direction of Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
