Mr. Joseph Gehrig 'Joe' Coggin, 74, of Ft. Meyers, FL, and Vancouver, Washington, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, at Cape Coral Hospital, Cape Coral, FL, from complications related to spinal surgery.
Joe was born on Nov. 3, 1939, in Welcome, GA, to the late Roy Lee Conggin Sr. and Evelyn Richards Rigdon.
He is survived by his brother, Robert Coggin; daughters, Remona Blevins, Rena Comstock, and Jackie McGee; son, Greg Coggin; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In his early years the family resided in Sargent before moving to the Handy community near Welcome when Joe's father purchased a farm. He attended school at Sargent and at Western. When Joe was growing up in Sargent he spent a great deal of time with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. O. M. Coggin, who lived in Handy areas and joined them on many occasions when they attended Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church.
At the very early age of 16 Joe enlisted in the Navy and served his country for four years. During his tour of duty in the Navy he was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain. His tour of duty on the USS Lake Champlain provided Joe the opportunity to grow up quickly in a world of men and machines.
During this tour of duty, Joe gained a great deal of insight into his strength and character, which contributed to his skills as a manager of people and the success he achieved in business.
After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he began his career in the aluminum business at the William Bonnell Aluminum Company in Newnan as a tool and die maker. His talents in the aluminum industry became well known, resulting in his being recruited by various aluminum manufacturers to serve in management positions. Acceptance of these management positions took him to many differing areas of the country, including Wisconsin, land of a thousand lakes (he never saw a lake during the six months he was there, because they were all frozen and covered with snow), to Horn Lake, Mississippi, where there was no lake at all.
In 1978 he accepted a position as Extrusion Department manager with Sapa Extrusion (formerly Anodizing Inc.) resulting in his move across the country to Vancouver, Washington, where he lived for many years and raised his four children. Three of his four children reside in Vancouver today. In 1989 Joe returned home to Georgia where he worked until his retirement.
After retirement Joe bought a winter home in Ft. Myers, Florida, and driven by a strong desire to spend more time with his children, grandchildren and extended family, Joe bought a motor home in which he logged thousands of miles traveling to Georgia, his summer home in Vancouver and his winter home in Ft. Myers, Florida.
Joe was the ultimate outdoors person, with fishing being one of his passions resulting in his becoming an excellent bass fisherman and participated in many bass tournaments on Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Ga.
His trophy case held many awards from his endeavors on the water, and they remained one of his proudest achievements. From the time he was old enough to shoot a shotgun he spent every opportunity hunting quail, squirrels and rabbits with his father and his uncles, Asa and Raymond Coggin. Joe was also a very skilled 'handyman' and could build or fix almost anything he was asked to repair or build.
A graveside memorial service will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery, Newnan, on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 3 p.m. with Dr. Harry Barrow officiating.
