Justin Wade "Guts" Spencer, age 44, died at his home, leaving behind his pain and suffering of this world on Tuesday, December 4, 2007, after a long battle with cancer. Guts was born to Louis L. and Charmoine L. (Stretch) Spencer on October 1, 1963, at Lewiston, the eighth child of ten. Guts lived his entire childhood at the family home in Pierce, Idaho, where he attended school.

He went to work at an early age in various family businesses, including motorcycle repair and logging, living at several locations around the country. He continued working in the logging industry until 1993, when a severe accident involving a line machine nearly took his life and left him disabled. Although his logging career was finished, he continued to pursue his favorite hobby - tinkering. Guts could make something usable out of almost any piece of scrap that others would have discarded. Anyone who knew him knew he especially liked working on old cars, pickups, motorcycles and bicycles, and he always had several in various stages of repair.

While living in Lewiston he and Charl R. Edwardsen were married and together they were blessed with one son, Jasper, born in October 1997, who resides with his mom in Orofino. They soon moved to the family property on Deer Creek in Orofino. Although they later divorced, they remained very close friends so both could be involved in Jasper's life. Charl became Guts' only caregiver during the entire length of his illness.

Guts appreciated a hardworking, simple lifestyle and he tried hard to instill the value of an unassuming nature in Jasper. Besides tinkering, other hobbies he enjoyed doing with Jasper were hunting, fishing, camping and making firewood. On not-so-good days they enjoyed watching TV together. He surrounded himself with an assortment of animals throughout his life including most recently his dogs Little Bit and Wilbur.

Justin is survived by his son, his ex-wife, and stepson, his mother, [five] brothers, and [three] sisters, uncles and aunts, several nieces and nephews. [Survivors names omitted.]

He was preceded in death by his father, Louis, and a sister, Angie Gentry.

A graveside service is planned for Thursday, December 13th at 2 p.m. for internment at the Weseman Cemetery, with Jeremy Gering officiating. Viewing will be earlier in the day. Please contact Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino for details. A potluck dinner and celebration of Guts' life will follow at the Senior Citizen Center, 930 Michigan Avenue. In lieu of flowers, an account for Jasper has been set up at Potlatch Credit Union. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.—The Lewiston Tribune Online, Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007
