Born in Magherasaul, County Down, Northern Ireland near Lurgan. Came to America in 1880. In Ireland, he served his time as apprentice gardener on Lord Lurden's Estate.
His first job was with the Christie Estate in Yonkers NY where he worked 20 years for $55 a month & a $5 gold piece at Christmas. He collected rents raised chickens & grew everything including orchids. In 1916 he moved to the Cleveland area where he received $200 a month for his gardening knowledge, with the Henry Doer Seed Co.
