He was the son of Colonel and Brevet Brigadier General Edmund B. Alexander and Elizabeth Ann Craig. He graduated from Yale University in 1854. After graduation he studied medicine at the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, where he received his MD degree in 1856. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon in the United States Army with the rank of 1st Lieut. on October 1, 1856. During the Civil War he was Inspector of Rebel prisons, in charge of a hospital and an Acting Medical Purveyor. He was promoted to Captain on October 1, 1861 and to Major and Surgeon on February 9, 1863. On March 13, 1865 he was made Brevet Lieut. Colonel for faithful and meritorious service during the war. Next, he was stationed at Army posts throughout the country. He was in St. Louis in 1866, 1874 and 1885. He was at West Point, New York in 1882 and was also assigned to New York City. He was an Examining Surgeon for the Recruiting Service and a Medical Purveyor. He was appointed Lieut. Colonel, Medical Department on July 36, 1886 and was brevetted Colonel on February 27, 1890 for gallant services in the Nez Perce Indian Campaign at Clearwater, Idaho, July 11-12, 1877. On September 11, 1891 he was appointed Colonel, and Chief Medical Purveyor of the United States Army in New York City. Then he was Senior Colonel in the Medical Department. He was later promoted to Brigadier-General and retired April 23, 1904. He was married December 3, 1863, at St. Louis, to Julia A., daughter of Dr. R.A. Barret. They had three daughters, Maria L., Edmonia Alexander and Lela. Lela, was married on November 2, 1892, to J. Emery, of Cincinnati, Ohio.
