Joseph Timothy Martelli was welcomed into the arms of the Lord surrounded by his loving family on Jan. 2, 2014.

Joe was born in Anaconda to Anthony and Bernice Martelli on Feb. 26, 1938, and grew up with his sisters, Dorothy (Barclay), Carmel (Johnson), Anne (Shoemaker), and his brother, Tony on Spruce Street. He married Isabelle in 1961 and had four daughters.

He was a proud Navy veteran. Early on, he worked at the Butte, Anaconda & Pacific Railway in Anaconda, as a painter in Seattle, and a policeman and the civil officer (one of his favorite jobs). After retiring from the Anaconda Police Force in 1993, he often mentioned that he was so busy that he wondered how he ever had time to work.

Joe was quite handy, he could build anything and do it well, including their home on Sunnyside. He could always be found whipping something up in the kitchen, like his famous ionoi (pasta with clam sauce), cookies, and cream puffs — a favorite among his grandchildren. Although he tried to out do Isabelle at making red spaghetti and potato salad, to his dismay, he never quite succeeded.

In his earlier years he enjoyed riding horses, hunting, playing racquetball and skiing. He was an avid fisherman and a golfer, plain and simple — he enjoyed beating his sons-in-law, nephew, and "the boys" — although they were never in complete agreement about the number of times. Joe loved to play poker. Nothing made him happier than winning a pot or two. When asked about how much he won, he always responded by saying "a couple of bucks," never letting Isabelle know how much money he kept in his foxy pocket.

He loved watching his grandkids play sports and they traveled throughout Montana and Idaho to catch the action. One of Joe's favorite places was at their cabin on Georgetown Lake, enjoying many summers with his family and friends, fishing, boating and telling stories around the campfire.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; mother- and father-in-law, Tom and Margaret Stewart;Sister's: Dorothy Martelli Barclay >
Carmelli Martelli Johnson>
brother: Tony Michael Martelli Jr>
brothers-in-law, Clayton Shoemaker, Elman H. Johnson>
and John Stewart; and nephews, Tony M Martelli>, and Ron Martelli>
;and niece: Dawn Marie Martelli>

He is survived by his wife, Isabelle; their daughters, Leslie and husband, Ron Nelson, Barbie and husband, Troy Martz, Jackie and husband, Mike Girard, and Vickie and husband, Greg Zoeller; grandchildren, Savannah, Maddie, Jake, Beau, Andie, Dylan, Sara and Mikey; and great-grandchildren, Mariah, Jessie, Austin and Cope. He also leaves behind his beloved sister, Anne Shoemaker; sister-in-law, Mary Martelli; brother-in-law, John Barclay; and brother- and sister-in-law, Bob and Ginger Stewart; and many dearly loved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and some great friends, Wade, Ed, Tom and Dick.

Joe lived a great life and loved his wife, family and friends. A couple of lessons learned from Joe — be good to your mother, don't lie, don't smoke, and knock it off before you get hurt!

Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, and the funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 10, in Holy Family Church in Anaconda.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at BIG CLIMB SEATTLE Participant Perry Elvy for Team Taylor, 123 NW 36th St, Seattle, WA 98107, 206-628-0777, fax 206-292-9291, or at [email protected].
