Composer, US Navy Bandmaster. He was born into a musical family in Newport, Rhode Island and educated at the Peabody Institute Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland. While in school he played, as a civilian, in the U.S. Naval Academy Band. He was named the band's leader in 1887 and served in that position until 1916. He was instrumental in developing the band into a nationally recognized group and wrote many songs, the most famous being, "Anchors Aweigh – The Song of the Navy". Beginning in 1892, each class of midshipmen presented "Zimmy" with a gold medal in recognition of his support and promotion of the Naval Academy through music. He died suddenly in 1916 and was originally buried in the cemetery at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Annapolis, Maryland. However, his body was later moved and interred at the Naval Academy cemetery where a granite monument was erected in his honor.
