"Mrs. Wanda Maxine Bender, 44, of Avoca, Iowa, died Aug. 6 at a hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, following a brief illness.

She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Schopfer of Savannah, and was preceded in death by two sisters who died in infancy.

She graduated from the Rosendale High School and the Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville. The summer of 1947 she attended UCLA of California and attended other colleges the past few years during the summer. In 1951 she was married to Robert L. Bender of Avoca. She was a commercial teacher and taught one year at Lewis, Iowa, and 22 years at Avoca.

She was a member of the Rosendale Christian Church, the Order of the Eastern Star No. 371, Rosendale, and the Iowa Teachers Association.

Rev. Laverne Keil of Avoca officiated at funeral services which were held at the Berthunsen Funeral Home Aug. 9 at 11 a.m. Pallbearers were teachers from the Avoca school. Graveside services were held at the Savannah Cemetery at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Byron Paxton, minister of the Rosendale Christian Church.
