Edith Rawlings Barlow Hyer, 96, passed peacefully on Dec. 17, 2013, surrounded by her family. The oldest of 12 children, Edith was born on Jan. 25, 1917, to Henry and Theresa Sorensen Rawlings in Fairview, Idaho. She spent her childhood on the family farm in Fairview working with her family and mothering her younger siblings. She graduated from Quish Beauty College and worked in Salt Lake City as a beauty operator.
She became reacquainted with a childhood friend and returned missionary, Granville Elwood Barlow, and they were married for eternity on Oct. 29, 1937, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. As a young couple, the two lived in Granger and Garland before settling on a dairy farm in Lewiston, Utah. They were blessed with six children and celebrated 49 years of marriage before Granville's passing March 25, 1986.
She later met Asael Bright Hyer, and they were married on Nov. 17, 1989, in the Logan LDS Temple. They lived in Lewiston and Ogden, Utah. They were dear companions for 23 years before Ace passed away in 2012.
Edith devoted her life to her family, whom she loved with all her heart. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served diligently in both church and community capacities. She was particularly fond of her time spent serving in the Young Women's and Relief Society organizations. She was dedicated to temple service - she and Granville served a mission at the newly-opened Dallas, Texas LDS Temple, and she later served as an ordinance worker in the Logan and Ogden Temples.
Edith was preceded in death by her son, Elwood Barlow, granddaughters Rochelle Barlow and Monica Barlow, one infant sister (Phyllis Rawlings), three brothers (Glen S. Rawlings, Wendell H. Rawlings and Ben E. Rawlings), sisters-in-law (Alyce Rawlings and Mabel Rawlings), and two brothers-in-law (Blaine Lemmon and Ivan Hobson). She is survived by her loving children, Elaine (Cleve) Hyer of Lewiston, Utah; daughter-in-law, Ileen Barlow of Corvallis, Ore.; David (Marilyn) Barlow of Orem, Utah; Gordon (Anna) Barlow of Lewiston; Robert Barlow of Lewiston; Julie Ann (Mark) Furniss of Ogden, Utah, three step children; Kay (Robert) Greaves of Layton, Utah; Richard (Bonnie) Hyer of Ogden, and Craig (Roxann) Hyer of Farr West, Utah; 32 grandchildren, 93 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her dear siblings, Gladys R. Lemmon, Janet R. (Clair) Fullmer, Ruth R. Hobson, Richard S. (Sharon) Rawlings and Henry H. (Rosalie) Rawlings, Jr. as well as sisters-in-law (Mary Lou Rawlings and Muriel Rawlings).
Funeral services will be at noon Saturday, Dec. 28, in the Lewiston 3rd Ward LDS Chapel, 16 S. Main Street in Lewiston, Utah. A viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Webb Funeral Home 1005 S. 800 East in Preston, Idaho and from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the church in Lewiston.
