APPERSON, Charles Logan, 90, of Bowling Green, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, December 31, 2013, after a recent illness. He was son of the late Harvey B. Apperson, former Attorney General of Virginia, and Louise Logan Apperson of Roanoke County. He graduated from Andrew Lewis High School (Salem High School). He volunteered for the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Pacific area from March 1943 to November 1945. He served as a lineman in Communications in the Battle of Okinawa. When he returned home, he attended Washington and Lee University and the University of Richmond, then the T.C. Williams School of Law (now, University of Richmond Law School.) He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He subsequently practiced law in both Roanoke and Salem for 26 years. He was a Christian, having a heart for those down and out, especially the poor. He was a 43 year member of American Legion Post 3, Roanoke, and a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, including Bowling Green VFW Post #10295. He attended the Bowling Green Christian Fellowship. He was a devoted husband of 58 years to Marjorie Timberlake Apperson; father to his daughter, Ellen A. Mandell (Steve) of Bowling Green; his son, Charles B. Apperson (Ruriko) of Tokyo, Japan; and grandfather to Elizabeth M. Hatton (Kyle), Chris Mandell and Tabitha M. Cooke (Josh); along with several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday January 3, 2014, at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, with Pastor Ernest Custalow of Grace Church in Fredericksburg officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service, with a burial to follow immediately after the service at Greenlawn Cemetery.
