Services are 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, and noon at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline, where he was a member. Burial is in St. Mary's Cemetery, East Moline.
Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, with a rosary recited at 6:30. Memorials may be made to the church.
Mr. Holmes was born Jan. 10, 1920, in Liverpool, England, the son of George and Jane Hume Holmes. He married Mary Smith Jan. 11, 1947, in Liverpool.
He was owner/operator of Holmes Painting and Decorating Co., Moline, for 50 years, retiring in 1990.
He was a Royal Air Force World War II veteran and was held prisoner of war in Singapore. He was a member of Cursillo and Pastoral Care at the church and a national organization of ex-POWs.
Survivors include his wife; daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Steve Hernandez, Moline, and Lynn and David Pearce, Milan; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Susan Holmes, Colorado Springs, Colo.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Ginny Hinchcliff, Liverpool, England, Vera Ripley, East Moline, and Teresa Parsons, Colona; and brothers, Joseph Holmes, East Moline, and Norbert Holmes, Liverpool. He was preceded by a daughter, Maureen, in 1966 and a brother, Fred.
