SPOKANE Alene Honeywell Curtis of Spokane, a longtime Orofino resident and wife of former Orofino mayor Albert Curtis, died of cancer Wednesday at her daughter's home in Spokane. She was 90.

She was born Aug. 16, 1903, at Clear Lake, S.D., to Henry [Jesse] and Ethel [Vere McFarland] Honeywell.

At an early age she moved with her family to Iowa and later to Spokane, where she graduated from Lewis-Clark High School in 1924.

She then attended the University of Idaho at Moscow, graduating in 1928 with a degree in drama. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, Phi Beta Kappa, PEO, American Association of University Women and the Mortar Board Society.

On Dec. 20, 1928, she married Albert Bruce (Bert) Curtis in the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority house on the UI campus. They were the first couple to be married in the house.

She and her husband made their home at Orofino, where she was an active member of the community and served on numerous volunteer and auxiliary groups. She was one of the founders of the Orofino Hospital Auxiliary and the Orofino Ladies Golf Association.

Her husband, who served as mayor of Orofino for more than 25 years, was influential in getting Dworshak Dam built in 1973. He died July 6, 1985.

She taught English at Orofino High School for a short time and also worked as a housekeeper and cook before moving to Spokane to live with her daughter in 1987.

She was a member of Orofino Methodist Church and enjoyed reading and painting.

Survivors include a daughter, four sons, a sister, 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. [Survivors names omitted.]

A brother, Jesse, died previously.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. July 30 at Orofino Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Koch officiating.

The family suggests memorial contributions be given to Hospice of Spokane, P.O. Box 2215, Spokane, Wash., 99210.—The Lewiston Tribune Online, Friday, July 22, 1994
