Stoneville, N.C. – Mr. Robert McKinley Scales, 84, died Sunday, December 29, 2013, at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden.
He was born September 10, 1929, in Henry County, Va., the late Samuel Lester and the late Lillie Maud Shelton Scales. He was also preceded in death two brothers, Harden Scales and Lester Carnell Scales.
He retired from WM Bassett Furniture Company after 44 years of service. Surviving is his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Redd Scales; daughters, Vonzella S. Hill (Patrick) of The Woodsland, Texas, Vanessa R. Griffin (Baxter) of Lewisville, N.C. and Valerie S. Jackson (Anthony) of Clemmons, N.C.; six grandchildren, Christopher, Raven, Ryan, Alexander, Austin and Avery; a brother, Vesharn Scales of Martinsville, Va.; sister, Roberta Smith (Sutton) of Prince George, Va.; and a sister-in-law, Doris Spencer Scales of Martinsville, Va.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 2, 2014, at Mayo Missionary Baptist Church in Ridgeway, Va., where he was a member, with pastor Dwight Mack officiating. Burial will be in the Redd Family Cemetery in Martinsville, Va.
The family will receive friends from noon to 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the church. Perry-Spencer Funeral Home, Madison is in charge of arrangements.
