"On Sabbath morning, the 26th inst., at her residence in this place, Hannah Saunders, wife of Daniel Smith, Esq., in the 51st year of her age. Mrs. Smith was stricken down on Saturday evening last, about 9 o'clock, with Apoplexy, and in a few hours breathed her last. For more than 20 years the dec'd was a resident of Uniontown, well known and much loved for her goodness. Pure minded, charitable, affectionate, cheerful and social, her death is a severe loss to the entire community; but worst of all, will the husband and children feel the loss. A true and loving wife, a devoted and faithful mother; she leaves a vacancy in the house hold always to be felt by the surviving family. But they "sorrow not as those who have no hope," for they know she "sleeps in Jesus." Though called away so suddenly, she was not unprepared. A life of simple, unostentatious piety, is the best possible evidence of a good death, such evidence she has left to her friends. For many years she was a consistent member of the Protestant Episcopal Church of this place. "She rests from her labor, and her works do follow her."
Genius of Liberty, Uniontown, PA, January 30, 1862, Vol. I, No. 52, page 5, column 2
