Monument. Located at Englefield Green, Surrey, England, the Air Force Memorial was officially unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II on October 17, 1953. Designed by Sir Edward Maufe with sculptor Vernon Hill, the memorial is dedicated to the 20,456 men and women from the British Empire who were lost in operations during World War II. All of the personnelrecorded, none have known graves anywhere in the world and many were lost without trace. The name of each airman and airwoman is engraved into the stone walls of the memorial, according to the country and the units of which they served. Also commemorated is the collective Commonwealth personnel of the Royal Air Force.
