John L. Gall died peacefully Dec. 29, 2013. He was born April 3, 1936, in Topeka, Kan., and grew up at 1105 Medford in Topeka.

John married Mary Norris June 22, 1958. They remained married until Mary's passing in 2009. They are survived by their children, Kenny Gall and Beth Whitson, Beth's husband Mark Whitson, and grandchildren, Scott, Tyler, and Adam Whitson. John graduated from Topeka High School in 1954. He played drums in the school band. He attended Washburn University and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1960 with a B.S. in Architecture. After John graduated from college, John and Mary lived in Topeka, and John worked as an Architect. From 1966-2000 John was employed by R.H. Macy and Co. During his 34 years at Macy's, he managed the construction of department stores in Topeka, Kansas City, New Orleans, Birmingham, Burbank, Minneapolis, Miami, and New Jersey. John has also managed the construction of over one hundred specialty stores for Macy's and coordinated the remodeling of nineteen Macy's stores coast to coast. The Gall family moved to Leawood, Kan. in October 1968 and lived there until 2012 when John moved to Hutchinson to be near family after Mary's passing.

John loved his children, cats, dogs, boats, trains both big and small, tractors, and anything mechanical. He was always working on something. John's favorite hobbies were sailing and camping. John bought his first sailboat in April 1954 just prior to graduating from High School. John has owned a sailboat ever since including 4 Lightnings. In 1971, John and two friends founded the Perry Yacht Club on Lake Perry, Kan., which recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. John was the Commodore at PYC in 1971 and 1972. John and Mary have won many trophies, racing their Lightning sailboat both locally and in races in a dozen states. John and Mary first camped in a tent, then a pop-top. They have owned a motor home since 1976, which they camped in most summer weekends at the Perry Yacht Club. They have also traveled and camped coast to coast, border to border on vacations with Kenny and Beth, with a few dogs and cats in tow. John will be sorely missed here on earth, but rest assured he and Mary are together again, sailing near a distant shore. Farewell, Sailor, and Godspeed.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Mount Hope Chapel, Topeka, Kan. Inurnment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. A memorial book will be available for friends to sign from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home and Crematory, Hutchinson.
