Studied at Oxford & the Middle Temple & was called to the Bar in 1612. Believed to have written the memorable protestation on the rights & privileges of the House of Commons, of which he was not a member. Together with several of the Members of the house of Commons, he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. He became a member of Parliament in 1623 & played an influential role in formulating Parliamentary policies in its quarrel with the king.
