Lewis Williams Barber, 48, a master carpenter, died April 7, in Alexandria, where he had lived since 1978.

Born in Macon, GA., Mr. Barber grew up in Georgia, Mississippi, Virginia and Louisiana, moving with his family as his father served in different assignments with the U. S. Forest Service. He graduated from high school in New Orleans, LA., where he apprenticed as a carpenter.

He moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1978 and began working as a carpenter. He worked continuously in the Washington area from 1978 to 2005. At the time of his death, he was serving as the president of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 1665, in Alexandria.

He was a longtime member of Immanuel Church-on-the- Hill, where he was a vestryman. A son, Luke Kendrick Barber died in 1990.

Survivors include his wife, Robin Forsberg Barber of Alexandria; two children, Phillip S. Barber of Alexandria, and Carlton Y. Barber of the U.S. Marine Corps; his parents, John C. Barber and Francene K. Barber of Warsaw, and a brother John C. Barber, Jr. of Temhagepura, Indonesia.

Funeral services were held at St. John's Episcopal Church, Warsaw on May 3, with interment in Emmanuel Cemetery, Emmerton.
