He was the valedictorian at Hobart College in Geneva New York in 1855. He graduated from General Theological Seminary of the Protestant Episcopal Church in New York City in 1860 and was ordained July 1, 1860. He married Adelaide Ruger on June 6, 1876. He was commissioned Post Chaplain for the US Army in 1876 and served in Texas, the Dakotas and California before his retirement in 1897. He was a Civil War veteran.
