Garland Hawthorne Johnson, 66, a resident of Virginia Beach, VA, died peacefully on December 19, 2013. Born in Coronado CA, on September 25, 1947, the daughter of Captain Robert Earle Hawthorne and Dorothy Garland Hawthorne, she was a graduate of Frankfurt American High School in Germany and attended Averett College in Danville, VA. She married Jay L. Johnson in 1968 and spent most of her life with the Navy. She lived abroad in Norway, Sweden, Germany, and Italy. She was a Red Cross and Navy Relief Volunteer, counselor to Navy families, and proud sponsor of USS PORTER (DDG 87). For all she contributed to the Navy, particularly to Navy families, Garland was awarded the Department of the Navy Distinguished Public Service Medal in July, 2000. She is survived by her daughter, Cullen Johnson Hill, her son-in-law, Noah M. Hill, and the pride of her life, grandson Noah Hawthorne Hill of Virginia Beach. She celebrated Noah's birth on October 16, 2013 with Noah's parents and her dearest friends, Captain and Mrs. Terry L. Glover of Bethesda, MD. Garland is also survived by her brother, Captain Robert Earle Hawthorne, Jr., of Knoxville, TN, her sister, Hillery Hawthorne Graham, of Oceanside, CA, their spouses, three nephews and one niece, and four grand-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving parents. Garland was a devoted mother who loved her daughter, her dachshunds, working in her yard, and the ocean. Her favorite home was in Virginia Beach and she also enjoyed Newport RI, where she lived twice. It was there where she developed her considerable skill in reupholstering furniture, a vocation she cherished. She was also a gourmet cook who excelled at creating in the kitchen. A service in celebration of her life will be held at All Saints' Episcopal Church, 1968 Woodside Lane, Virginia Beach at 2:00 p.m. on January 17th. She will be laid to rest in Princess Anne Memorial Park following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in support of military families may be made in Garland's name to the Fisher House Foundation (www.fisherhouse.org).
