William enlisted from Yatton, Iowa as a Corporal in Co. "K", 13th Iowa Infantry, on October 10, 1861. He was wounded at Shiloh on April 6, 1862, and was discharged for wounds at Keokuk on October 20, 1862.
After the War, he lived in Riverside, and was a member of Iowa City's Kirkwood Post #8, Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.).
