FAIRBURY - Gordon D. Sands, 55, resident of Fairbury and a Postal Service employee for 35 years and active in civic and Masonic organizations, died at 7 a.m. yesterday (Aug. 6, 1991) at his home.

He had been ill with cancer since June 1990.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church of Fairbury, the Revs. Stanley Rapp and Tom Goodell officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, rural Fairbury.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Fairbury, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. A Masonic service will be conducted by the Fairbury Tarbolton Masonic Lodge 351 at 8 p.m. today at the memorial home.

Mr. Sands was born July 27, 1936, in Springfield, a son of Stanley L. and Beula Denison Sands. He married Donna M. Ward Sept. 2, 1956, in Fairbury. She survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Cindy S. Helmers, Cropsey, and Sara Marie Sands, Fairbury; and two grandchildren.

His parents preceded him in death. Mr. Sands, a 1954 graduate of Lanphier High School, Springfield, attended Illinois State Normal University for 1 years from 1954 to 1955.

He worked for 35 years in the Fairbury Post Office, retiring July 31. He also had served as the officer in charge at the Gridley Post Office for eight months and was involved with quality work life of the Postal Service for more than 10 years.

Before working for the Postal Service, Mr. Sands was in the Air Force from Nov. 15, 1955, to Nov. 14, 1959, stationed at Kelly Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

He had worked 26 years in conjunction with the Miss America Pageant and was a state field director with the Miss Illinois Pageant.

Mr. Sands was named 1991 Hawk Fan of the Year and was statistician for Prairie Central athletics.

He formerly served on the citizens advisory committees of Fairbury Hospital and Fairbury-Cropsey Community Unit School District.

He was a past member of the United Way Fund drive of Fairbury; Indian Creek Country Club of Fairbury; the Fairbury Tarbolton Masonic Lodge 351 and Templar Lodge; and Mohammed Temple Shrine, Peoria. He played trumpet for the Shrine marching brass band.

Mr. Sands was past patron of Lodge 198 of the Order of the Eastern Star of Fairbury, having served in 1967, and was a past member of the Fairbury Rotary and Jaycee clubs.

A member of the First United Methodist Church of Fairbury, he was past treasurer of the church and an active member of the chancel choir.

Memorials may be made to the Gordon D. Sands Family Academic Scholarship at Prairie Central High School.
