Eric K. Jorgensen, 73, of Assonet, MA, passed away on Christmas Eve morning, December 24, 2013, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Hartford, CT, on July 26, 1940. He was the loving son of the late Edgar and Doris Jorgensen. His family moved to Harwich Port, MA when Eric was a young boy. He was a graduate of Harwich High School, where he was an outstanding athlete, leading the basketball team to Boston Garden for a championship tourney. Eric also attained the highest honor of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America.

He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Education from North Adams State College in 1962. He was a United States history teacher at Apponequet Regional High School for 37 years, retiring in 1999. He was well known for his extraordinary story-telling, captivating his students' attention and creating lasting impressions, while making our country's history come alive. One of the highlights of his teaching career was leading Apponequet's bicentennial celebration in 1976.

Eric was married to his best friend, Rae, for 51 years. They were childhood sweethearts, sharing their first dance at a sixth grade social. After raising their two children, they established The Memory Shoppe, traveling the antique show circuit through New England and New York, selling vintage comic and character collectibles.

Eric's family was his world. Besides his beloved wife, Rachael, he leaves behind his cherished children, Juliene Mills and her husband, James, of Berkley, MA, and his son Derron Jorgensen of Assonet. His two granddaughters, Kaylyn and Kelsey Mills, brought the greatest joy and light to his life. He affectionately called them his Bright Eyes and Blue Eyes.He is also survived by two loving sisters, Karen and husband Leo Dumas, of Foxboro, MA, and Kristine and husband Paul Dery, of Harwich, MA, as well as his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Peter Jorgensen of Merrimack, NH.

Eric was an aficionado of silent movie stars, especially Charlie Chaplin, a lover of biographies, always curious about people and their contributions, an avid follower of the National Geographic and History channels, as well as a big fan of 50's rock and roll. He was lovingly known as a walking encyclopedia. If you ever needed an answer to almost any question, you could always just ask Eric. His gentle ways, wide depth of knowledge, and generous heart will be greatly missed and always remembered.
