Following the Federal Census for Howard and his family can be difficult.

1880 - He is at his parent's home in Beaver Dam, Cherokee, NC, with other siblings and his grandmother Louisa Kirkland.

1900 - He is HoH in Beaver Dam with his wife#1 Alice and first son Robert. Also at his home is Minnie Cole (servant) who will marry Alice's brother who lives next door.

1910 - He is HoH still in Beaver Dam and although he remarried in 1907 and listed as married, his wife#2 Victoria is not with him. He has his two sons from Alice (presumed dead with no further information found on her at this time). Victoria is at her parent's home about 25 houses away in Beaver Dam but is listed as a widow using her maiden name. The enumerator likely misunderstood or misentered the information. She has her first daughter (presumably by Howard), Leona, b. 1909, with her. At this time we don't know why the two are living apart.

1920 - No census record has been located yet for Howard or Victoria, but the search continues.

1930 - He has moved to Marble, Cherokee, NC, as HoH and now shows his wife#2 Victoria with him and their three daughters (Leona, Leola, Leora). His son Charlie married Gretta Lance in 1925 and they are on their own in 1930. His older son Robert is living with his Aunt Rosanna Crain and her husband William Sneed in Valley, Cherokee, NC, through the 1950 Census.
