William served as the Lieutenant Colonel & Company Commander of the 3rd Delaware Infantry during the Assault on Petersburg, Virginia in June, 1864 during the Civil War.

The 3rd Delaware Infantry was part of the 4th Division, 2nd Brigade under Brigadier General Lysander Cutler.

William was "Killed In Action" during this battle.

Prior to the war William was employed as a Salesman in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Private Thomas Dorrell, also of the 3rd Delaware Infantry, was also "Killed In Action" at Cold Harbor 15 days before William and was possibly related to William.

The 3rd Delaware Infantry lost a total of 135 men during the war; 7 officers and 46 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded, 2 officers and 80 enlisted men died of disease.
