The Kinsolvings were well known Episcopal clergy in Virginia, Maryland and elsewhere and his mother's family, the Krauths, were known for service in the Lutheran church. After attending the University of Virginia and Virginia Theological Seminary, he was ordained a priest in 1875. He married Grace Jaggar of New York on October 8, 1879, and they had one child. Originally consecrated as assistant bishop of Texas in 1892, Kinsolving became presiding bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas in 1893. A proponent of growth of the University of Texas at Austin, including housing for female students, Kinsolving Residence Hall bears his name. Although originally buried at Oakwood Cemetery, he was re-interred beneath the altar of All Saints Chapel, near campus, which he helped found.
