Lyon Playfair, 1st Baron Playfair was born on 21 May 1818 at Chunar, India. He was the son of George Playfair and Janet Ross. He married 3 times: First to Margaret Eliza Oakes, daughter of James Oakes, on 28 July 1846; second: Jean Ann Millington, daughter of Crawley Millington, on 17 December 1857 and lastly Edith Russell, daughter of Samuel Hammond Russell, on 3 October 1878. He died on 29 May 1898 at age 80.
He was educated at St. Andrews University, St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland. He was Professor in 1845 at New School of Mines, Jermyn Street, London, England. He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 1848. He graduated from Giessen University, Giessen, Hessen, Germany, with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). In 1851 he helped to organise the Great Exhibition. He was invested as a Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1851. He was Presidet of the Chemical Society between 1857 and 1859. He was Professor of Chemistry between 1858 and 1869 at University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for the Universities of Edinburgh and St. Andrews between 1868 and 1885. He held the office of Postmaster-General in 1873. He held the office of Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons between 1880 and 1883. He was invested as a Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1883. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for South Leeds between 1885 and 1892. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.). He held the office of Lord-in-Waiting to HM Queen Victoria between 1892 and 1895. He was created 1st Baron Playfair, of St. Andrews, co. Fife [U.K.] on 3 September 1892. He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1895.
