Ex-Spanish Fork Woman Dies at 84 In California

SPANISH FORK - Alice Esther Payzant Hughes, 84, a former resident of Spanish Fork and Salt Lake City, died Thursday, at La Mirada, Calif., of causes incident to age.

She was the widow of a former Utah County Commissioner, William B. Hughes. Born April 16, 1877, at Dover, Wis., she was the daughter of John D. and Emma Bucher Payzant.

She and her parents came to Utah as converts to the LDS church. They settled in Spanish Fork. She was married to William Bowen Hughes Aug. 4, 1897, in the Manti LDS Temple. He died July 12, 1932.

Surviving are three sons and three daughters, George Dewey Hughes, Menlo Park, Calif.; Ronald Earl Hughes, Salt Lake City; and Albert Charles Hughes, La Mirada, Calif.; Mrs. Arthur O. (Mary) Williams, Dos Palos, Calif.; Mrs. Jessie (Gladys) Harrington, Los Angeles, and Mrs. Norris (Myrtle) Ingham, Salt Lake City; three step-children, Delbert Bowen Hughes, Mrs. Albert G. (Jennie) Brockbank, and Mrs. Leslie (Janet) White, all of Salt Lake City; 28 grandchildren; 78 great-grandchildren; 13 great great-grandchildren; a brother, Reuben E. Payzant, Salt Lake City; three sisters, Bertha Fife and Mrs. Douglas Strang, both of Los Angeles, and Mrs. George Alder, Salt Lake City.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a. m. in the Spanish Fork Second-Ninth LDS Ward chapel, with Bishop Clyde Swenson of the Second Ward officiating. Friends may call at the Walker Mortuary Sunday between 8 and 9 p. m. or Monday prior to services. Burial will be in the Spanish Fork City Cemetery.

Last Rite Set For Widow of S.L. Aide

Funeral services for Mrs. William Bowen Hughes, widow of a former county commissioner of Utah and Salt Lake counties, will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in the Spanish Fork Second Ward Chapel, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mrs. Hughes, 84, of La Mirada, Calif., died Thursday in La Mirada, after lingering illness.

Mrs. Hughes was born Alice Esther E. Payzant on April 16, 1877, at Dover, Wis., to John Dexter and Mary Emma Bucher Payzant. She was married to William Bowen Hughes, Aug. 4, 1897, in the Manti LDS Temple.

SURVIVORS Include sons and daughters, George Dewey, Menlo Park, Calif.; Ronald Earl, Mrs. Norris (Myrtle) Ingham, both of Salt Lake City; Albert Charles, La Mirada. Calif.; Mrs. Arthur O.
