Tarlton was the most popular comedian of his age. He was Queen Elizabeth I's favorite jester as well as being an actor and ballad writer. He is entered into theatrical history as the creator of the stage yokel. His performance in this role is said to have influenced Shakespeare in his creation of the character's Bottom (Midsummer Night's Dream) and Tarlton himself is said to be the model for the court jester Yorick (Hamlet).
