Miss Elizabeth Pearl Alexander, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel Alexander, Sr., was born September 14, 1914 in Columbus, Georgia. Shortly after her birth she was given the nickname "Pretty" because she was such a pretty baby.

~~United in Christ at an early age, "Betty", as she was fondly called, embarked on a journey that would throughout her life touch many lives. Quiet, soft-spoken and easy going, Betty was a dedicated member of First African Baptist Church, doing whatever she could, whenever she could. Joining under the pastorate of the late Rev. J.H. Brown, she was a member of FAB for more than seventy years. She was a primary Sunday School teacher, served on the Finance Committee, member of the FABS, taught Vacation Bible School, worked in the Crisis Closet and a member of Rachel Missionary Circle. Because of her faithfulness and Christian service, Miss Alexander was named FAB's Woman of the Year in 1982.

~~Betty received her early education in the public school of Columbus, Georgia and was a member of Spencer High School's first graduating class. She furthered her education by attending Ft. Valley State University, earning a BS degree in early Elementary Education and a MA degree in Early Childhood Education from New York University. Children and schools were her first loves. She began her teaching career at Radcliff Elementary School. She also taught at Cusseta Road Elementary where she later retired.

~~During her lifetime, Betty traveled to many countries in Europe, the Caribbean Islands and Hawaii. She was affiliated with numerous educational, civic and social organizations; Life member of Muscogee Retired Educators, Georgia Retired Educators Association, National Education Association and Ft. Valley State University National Alumni Association, Club 13 and a Golden Life Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Being the oldest member of her family, Betty took her role as matriarch quite seriously. Because of her love and generosity, her family considered her a blessing from God. She was a retired school teacher having taught at Radcliff Elementary School and Cussetta Elementary School.

~~Those remembering her with cherished memories are a niece, Harriett E. Sherald of Columbus; niece-in-law, Geraldine H. Sherald of Columbus; two great nieces, Harriet (Dom) Grayson of Lithonia, GA., Amy M. Sherald of Columbus; two great nephews, Amos P. Sherald, IV of Long Island, NY, Michael E. Sherald of Columbus; and many loving cousins and friends. Miss Alexander departed this life on Tuesday at her residence, 3221 Decatur Street in Columbus at the blessed age of 91.

~~Homegoing celebration was held Monday at the graveside in the family plot at Porterdale Cemetery. Visitation was Sunday at the funeral home, followed by an Omega Omega Service by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Arrangements by Progressive Funeral Home, Inc.
